Hager, Kent Albert

Kent Albert Hager, 66, of New London, WI, formerly of Dwight, died peacefully at home surrounded by his immediate family on October 3, 2019, after a brief but tumultuous battle with cancer.

He was born on April 2, 1953, in Bloomington, IL, to George and Lois (Swansbro) Hager of Dwight, IL. The second of four children, he spent his childhood and early working years in Dwight. He attended the Dwight Township public schools and graduated in 1971. He attended Hanover College in Madison, IN, receiving an M.S. degree in economics in 1975. While at Hanover, he joined the Sigma Chi – Chi Chapter fraternity and became a Life Loyal Sig in 1988. One of Kent’s favorite stories is recounting the details about the tornado that ripped through the campus on his 21st birthday. A course involving small town economic analysis spurred his interest in city planning, and this led to his 41-year public service career in city and county government.

A lifelong worker and public servant, Kent returned to Dwight briefly to work at the R R Donnelley commercial printing plant to pay for his tuition for graduate school at Florida State University, where he earned an M.S. degree in urban and regional planning in 1975. During his time in Florida, Kent worked for the regional planning council in Ocala before accepting a position as a senior planner for the San Luis Valley Council of Governments in Alamosa, CO. In this capacity he honed his grant writing skills to obtain state and federal funds for a variety of projects. He served as a circuit-rider city manager to four small SLV communities: Center, Creede, Manassa and Saguache. In 1985 he was hired as the city-county-land use administrator for Creede and Mineral County, where he remained until 1995.

In 1988 he married Callie Cochran, and they have raised two daughters. A newly-formed county administrator position for Lake County drew him to Leadville, CO, where he worked for four years. In 1999 he and his family moved to New London, where he served as the city administrator until his retirement in May of this year. He is a lifetime member of the International City County Management Association, Rotary International, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Creede Chapter No. 506.

Kent’s pastimes often involved being out on the open road and meeting new people. He enjoyed flying glider planes and attending numerous Indianapolis and Daytona 500 races, Road America events at Elkhart Lake, the Iola Car Show, and the Symco Shakedown. A perfect day included riding his classic 1950 Harley Davidson 45 Flathead on winding county roads or hopping in his MG Midget for a trip to Keller Park or Tustin. He loved live music and exploring hole-in-the-wall taverns off the beaten path. He was an amazing cook who enjoyed taking risks with spices and condiments. Kent enjoyed hearing and telling stories, but he avoided gossip and malicious conversations, asking why people couldn’t just get along with one another.

He was a member of the Dwight United Methodist Church, the Leadville Presbyterian Church, and the New London First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Kent is preceded in death by his nephew, Jeffrey G. Neville, of Carrollton, Texas; his mother, Lois A. Hager, of Dwight; and his older brother, Scott R. Hager, of Dwight. He is survived by his wife, Callie Cochran-Hager of the home; two daughters, Quinn Elizabeth (special friend Josh Ewert) and Erin Beth; his father, George Hager, of Dwight; two sisters, Martha (Tom) Neville of Carrollton, TX, and Cynthia (John) Downey of Geneva, IL; two nephews, Thomas Neville and Cole Downey, and one niece, Margot Downey.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7, 2019 at The First Congregational United Church of Christ in New London with Rev. Greg Watling officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the American Hemochromatosis Society or the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Daphne K. (Adams) Hankey, of Hortonville, formerly of New London, was tragically taken away from this earth by a car accident on Sunday, October 6, 2019 ,at the age of 57.

She was born in Mattoon, IL about 1:30 p.m. on May 13, 1962, daughter of Thomas and Lyda (Adams), and just so happened she was Lyda’s Mother’s Day present! In 1982 she followed her family up to cold Wisconsin. In 1988 despite being a single mother to two children she graduated nursing school with her RN Degree. On April 16, 1988, Daphne married her other half and soul-mate John Douglas Hankey. So who was Daphne? Well her titles were RN, wife, daughter, sister, mother, niece, aunt, cousin, grandmother, friend… yet she was so very much more. She took pride in keeping her home and making dinners for her family. She loved the sound of a good wind-chime and music resonated her soul and called to her. The beauty of a wildflower mesmerized her and made her feel light. The laughter of her grandbabies fueled her heartbeat. She loved to capture the world through her camera lens to share with others and freeze moments in time. She loved to quilt, to encompass her loved ones in her love even when she couldn’t be with them. With everything she did from homeschooling her children, cross stitching, making Halloween costumes for her children, baking, cooking, she made it all look so easy and effortless. Daphne had a caring, loving, non-judgmental, accepting soul and the gift of words. She had the unique ability to soothe and calm someone through anything they were facing. But words alone can never do her justice; she will be missed always and loved forever.

Daphne is survived by her knight in shining armor, her loving husband John Douglas Hankey; her children whom she loved fiercely, Valerie Johnson (Aron S.), Jared Hankey (Erin M.), John Ethan (Brandy) Hankey; her grandbabies who were her pride and joy, the bits of happy in her eyes, Jessie B., Travis, Ronan, Kail, Scarlett, Georgia, Ruby and bitty boy Quinton; her loving parents, Thomas and Lyda Adams; her “baby” brothers, Troy (Terri) Adams, Shane (Solvei) Adams; sisters in-law, Leslie (Mike) Dugas, Mary (Joe) Hankey and brother in-law Mark Hankey; many nieces and nephews who were a great joy in her life: Sara, Jake, Alesha, Adrian, Mathew, Erin, Annie, Jamie, Eili, Espen, Cora, Benjamin and Michael. Also countless other family and loved ones. Her youngest son Mitchel Wesley Hankey was waiting for her in Heaven along with Mitchel’s best friend and adopted son Jordan Ortner. Anyone that knew Daphne knew that family was more than blood.

A Celebration of Life for Daphne will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Cline & Hanson Funeral Home, New London with Rev. Jim Curtis officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of celebration. Family asks instead of flowers to bring wind-chimes as she loved them so, they will hang in the tree by her, Mitch and Jordan’s graves. Feel free to bring your “Daphne” quilt to hang on the chairs at the service. The Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London is serving the familyl www.clinehansonfuneralhome.com

Wayne R. Koehler, 58, of New London, went home to his Savior on Saturday, October 5, 2019, with family and friends by his side.

He was born on July 17, 1961, in West Bend, WI to the late Leonard & Ida (Parnitzke) Koehler. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in West Bend, Wisconsin. His family moved to Shawano where Wayne attended primary school and was confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church. Wayne graduated from Shawano High School in 1980. He also attended Fennimore Technical Collage to complete his certification in meat cutting. On June 20, 2015, he was united in marriage to Scarlett (Besaw) Polley at the Wilson Gazebo in New London, surrounded by their family and friends. Wayne was a loving husband, father, papa, brother, uncle and friend. He lived his life by example and was always someone you could count on to be there no matter what. His faith, family and friends were his priority, and in that order. He was always good for his one-liners or singing on-demand to whatever random word you may have said. He also entertained friends and family with his un-reviewed voice texting. He worked for Accurate Appraisal company for almost 20 years – a job that he thoroughly loved. He was also employed at Hillshire in New London for almost 20 years prior to that. When he wasn’t as work, you could find Wayne at the golf course; he never met another golfer he didn’t like. He was even lucky enough to hit three hole-in-ones in his lifetime. Wayne was an avid sports fan of all things Wisconsin – Packers, Brewers, Bucks and the Badgers. He also pitched horse shoes, played numerous years of softball, and loved hunting and fishing too. He was also a great Sheepshead and poker player, which he played on a regular basis with his family and friends. He would routinely pick on a bare queen because, after all, “it’s only chips.” Wayne was a long-time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London and loved listening to Gospel music.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Scarlett; sons, Marcus (Lauren) Koehler, Weston Koehler (special friend Kaylyn) and grand-son, Michael; step-son Zachariah Polley (special friend Jordan); step-daughter Madison Polley (special friend Matt); his sisters, Nancy Koehler, Shirley (Randy) Hacker, Diane Seehafer, Sharon (Rick) Nuske, and Terri (Tom) Watters; in-laws, Lee & Sue Besaw; brothers-in-law Andrew (Erin) Besaw, Nick (Crystal) Besaw; sister-in-law, Katie (Zack) Smith; grand-parents-in-law, Werner & Jeanine Koehler; his “adopted” mother, Jeanne Nuske; aunt, Isabelle Westerfeld; uncles, Kenny (Dorothy) Koehler, Harley (Alice) Koehler, and William Parnitzke. Wayne is further survived by many nieces, nephews.

As Wayne’s family, we are grateful to God for giving us so many wonderful memories which we will treasure forever. We have been blessed by Wayne’s amazing friends which were a constant source of support to him, Scarlett and the rest of the family. Thank you to the ThedaCare Hospice nurses who were a great support over the last several weeks. Wayne was the rock of the family and will be in the hearts and thoughts of everyone forever. Wayne had said many times that he “wasn’t here for a long time, but here for a good time.” As the song goes, “He left nothing behind.”
