Tessen, Leonard

Leonard Lewis Tessen, age 79, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the Wisconsin Veteran’s Home in King.

He was born on September 9, 1939, son of the late Edwin and Caroline (Vollmer) Tessen, in the Town of Warren, Waushara County, Wisconsin. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Auroraville, Wisconsin on October 1, 1939. He was confirmed on March 29, 1953, at St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church in Weyauwega. Leonard graduated from Weyauwega High School in 1957 and U.W. Oshkosh with a B.S. Degree in 1963. He proudly served his country for 3 years in the U.S. Army. He attended graduate schools at Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, Michigan and U.W. Stevens Point. Leonard spent most of his working years in libraries including 21 years as a reference assistant in the State Library of Wisconsin in Madison. He was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Waupaca.

He is survived by a brother Roger (Linda) Tessen; sister Betty (Glenn) Drath; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law Lester (Carol) Tessen.

A memorial service for Leonard will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wisconsin Veteran’s Home Main Chapel at King with Chaplain Wayne Schwanke officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the chapel on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. The Cline Hanson Dahlke Funeral Home in Weyauwega is serving the family.

Betty J. Wittke (nee Wasrud) moved on to the next phase of her eternal journey on September 6, 2019 at the age of 86.

Loving mother of Jayne (Harold) Murnane, Judy (Charlie) Zutell, and Paul (Lori). Dear grandmother of Amelia, Alexander, Ellie, Eric (Priya), Troy, and Jacob. Caring great-grandmother of Dominick and Elysia. Also survived by a niece, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church (9131 S. Howell Ave. Oak Creek, WI). Memorial Service will follow at 12 p.m.

Betty was a proud Norwegian who enjoyed gardening, her home, spending time with her family and many friends. She was a retired nurse from St. Francis Hospital where she spent many years in the nursery. Memorials are appreciated to All Saints Lutheran Church in Oak Creek.

Our lovely mother, Albertina “Tina” Gensler, age 93, was called to her heavenly home on September 10, 2019.

She was born November 8, 1925 in the town of Brillion to William and Johanna (Zick) Keuer. On September 20, 1947, Tina married the love of her life, Donald Gensler, at Rural United Methodist Church of Brillion. They celebrated 70 years of marriage prior to Don’s death in 2018. They lived in and around Weyauwega for nearly all of their married life. Tina was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed quilting and other needle crafting. She took pleasure in attending to her flowers. She also loved to sing, and lent her alto voice to a number of churches and community choral groups including the Sweet Adelines. She and Don enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, bowling, dancing, and traveling. Her life was rich with family friends, and faith. She was a wonderful blend of strength, kindness, wisdom, common sense, and humor. Tina was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Baldwins Mill.

Tina is survived by her loving family, including children, Gary (Bev) Gensler, Barb (Dale) Dishno, and Arlie (Jan) Gensler; grandchildren: Jenny Gregory, Kelley Gensler (Andy Schimke), Joey Wesley, Kristina Dishno, Olivia and Jamie Gensler; great-grandchildren: Paige, Kirsten and Chloe Gregory and Victor Schimke. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Tina was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and their spouses, and by Don’s brothers and sister and their spouses.

The funeral service for Tina will be held on Tuesday September 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Baldwins Mill. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at Cline Hanson Dahlke Funeral Home, Weyauwega and at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. She will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in Weyauwega. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Baldwins Mill are appreciated.

Geneva Grace Marzinzik, age 101 of New London, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2019at Trinity Terrace surrounded by her daughters.

Geneva was born to the late Hector and Frieda (Reuter) Vandelois on June 4, 1918 in Appleton. She was united in marriage to Henry Marzinzik on December 7, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1976. Geneva was a seamstress for many years in New London. She loved playing cards and belonged to many card clubs. Geneva was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Ev. Church in New London.

Geneva is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (R.J.) Wargula, Rose (Steve Thompson) Stern and Verna LeNoble; her son, Robert Marzinzik; grandchildren, Katanu (Kimenyi) Waruhiu, Kioko (Thato) Mwosa, Ted (Teri) Stern, Dale (Tammy) Stern, Matt (Jill) LeNoble, Scott (Jenni) LeNoble, Charmaine (Kurt) Gunderson, Brian (Dawn) Stern, Brenda Stern and Jim (Sue) Stern and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by goddaughter Reeny Gagnow. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, daughter, Carla Marzinzik and Janis (Joseph) Mwosa; sons-in-law, Dan LeNoble and Jim Stern; one brother; one sister and her granddaughter, Lisa Meyer.

The Christian funeral for Geneva will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2019 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London with Rev. William Heiges officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Lebanon. Donald D. Schmidt, age 83, of Waupaca, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2019 at his home.

Don Schmidt…A husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a friend and so much more. He thoroughly enjoyed every waking moment of the day, always saying “good morning” or “hello” or “goodnight” with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. Mary Ruth Peterson, age 93 of Waupaca, WI entered her forever heavenly home in the arms of Jesus on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Bethany Pines in Waupaca.

She was born on May 25, 1926 in LaPorte, Indiana. She married Adolph Peterson on August 25, 1945 in Heston, Indiana. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1998. Mary enjoyed sewing, crosswords, embroidering, gardening and selling her berries to the community. But mostly spending time with her family and many friends.

Mary is survived by her children, Dorothy Lanning of Alabama, Emil (Wendy Lu) Peterson of Waupaca, WI; grandchildren: Anthony (Dawn) Peterson, Judi (Robert) McCall, Tonya (Pete) Robinson, TonyAllen Peterson, Patrick (Jeanne) Peterson, Paul (Nichole) Peterson, Robert May, Raymond (Jennifer) Lanning, Joylene (Jeff) Bernard, Julie Lanning, Amanda Peterson; also many great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandchild Sarah Lanning.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 19th at Waupaca Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Kathleen “Kay” Marian Johnson, age 86, died peacefully in her home in Little Canada, MN on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

Kay was baptized on September 20, 1932 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Symco. She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith on June 9, 1946.

She will be greeted in heaven by her parents, Arnold and Velma Dretke; her siblings, Gene and Frank Dretke and Shirley Mielke and by her husband Robert Johnson. Kay is survived by her brother Jim (Barbara) Dretke; sister-in-law, Glenda Dretke; her children: David (Kathy) Jones, Daniel Jones, Julie (Pat) Casby, Jan (John) Samson, Bryan (Mary) Johnson, Joanne (Lee) Hollom, Becky (Anthony) Seme and Jeffrey Johnson; her grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Doris R. Schwandt passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at her daughter’s home.

She was born January 4, 1921, daughter of the late Anton and Ida (Anderson) Johnson. After graduating from Clintonville High School, Doris married Virgil R. Schwandt on August 16, 1939. He preceded her in death on February 22, 1996.

Doris is survived by her son Charles, his son Rick (Lynn), their son, Stephan (Cassie), their daughter Elise (Mom’s great-great granddaughter); daughter Alyssa Schwandt. Charles’ son Scott Schwandt; daughter Diane (Peter) Lutz, her son William Brugger, his daughter Kimmie and Kimmie’s half sister, Kylie Klatt, and Peter’s son Jon Lutz. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doris was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law Audrey Schwandt; son-n-law Wayne Brugger; brothers, Leroy, Chester (Shirley), Richard, Robert (Betty) Johnson; Virgil’s parents, siblings and spouses, nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held at First Ev. Lutheran Church in Shiocton, with Pastor Paul Hinz officiating. Burial will be in Shiocton Bovina Cemetery, Town of Bovina.

Sopa, Edwina E.

Edwina E. Sopa, age 88, of Scandinavia, Wisconsin, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 after a short illness at her residence.

She was born in Amherst, Wisconsin on December 26, 1930, daughter of the late Peter and Johanna (Sommers) Mrochinski. She married Severine “Bud” Sopa on October 28, 1950 at St James Catholic Church in Amherst, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2002. Mom was a spiritual person, relying on prayer for her courage and strength throughout her life. She knew the importance of living in the moment, that every day was truly a blessing. There was not a night that went by without a rosary in her hands. This brought comfort and peace to her. Although our hearts are heavy for losing someone so special to so many, we will celebrate her life and cherish the times we were able to spend together. Comfort comes from all our memories for now and the greatest peace will come when we are together again.

She is survived by her family: Edwin (Sally) Sopa, Marvin Sopa, John (Brenda) Sopa, Arelene (Patrick) Goggins, Audrey (Tom) Lubinsk, Mark Sopa, Don Sopa and Miok Sopa; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Trzebiatowski and a brother, Ronald Mrochinski. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter, Charlotte and three brothers: LeRoy, Harlan, and Robert Mrochinski.

Nancy May (Struzynski, Rasmussen) Cook, age 65, of Cecil, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 20, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay with her son Logan by her side.

Nancy was born on December 1, 1953 in Wild Rose, WI. She earned bachelor’s degrees in Natural Resources and Computer Drafting and Design. She enjoyed her time as a school bus driver in Clintonville and was active in 4-H, serving as the Key Goat Leader in Waupaca County for over 30 years. Nancy loved children and was a mom to all. She also loved animals and adopted numerous “fur babies” as she liked to call them. She was always taking care of others and was a great friend to many.

Nancy is survived by: her son, Logan Rasmussen of Cecil; three grandchildren, Alex, Jordan, and Tyler; three great-grandchildren, Reaven, Ezryn, and Heather; one brother, Joe Struzynski; as well as numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Heather and her parents.

Lawrence, Eunice E. (Nulton)

Eunice E. (Nulton) Lawrence, age 86, of Waupaca, WI, went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI.

She was born July 1, 1933 in Rice Lake, WI; daughter of C. Paul and Ethel (Bemis) Nulton. Eunice and her family lived in several small western Wisconsin villages; Colby, Elmwood, Pepin and LaFarge. She graduated from LaFarge High School in 1951 and graduated from Stout Institute in 1955. Eunice taught high school home economics in Melrose and Viroqua, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Donald J. Lawrence on July 27, 1956. When Donald retired from active military duty, they moved to Waupaca, WI in 1971. Together they shared 55 years of marriage before his passing on April 12, 2012. Eunice served the community as the Farmington Township certified clerk/treasurer for 14 years and a Waupaca County Board Supervisor for 24 years. She volunteered at the Waupaca County Courthouse, her church, and the Wisconsin Veterans Home where she faithfully played piano for the Protestant chapel services for 19 years. Eunice will be dearly missed by all of her loving family and friends.

Eunice is survived by her son, Stephen (Lisa) Lawrence of Waupaca, WI; her daughter, Mardana Lawrence of Waupaca, WI; three grandchildren, Christopher (Jackie) Lawrence of Hortonville, WI, Jennifer Lawrence of Waupaca, WI, and Sara Lawrence of Waupaca, WI; two step-grandchildren, Graham Britton of Waupaca, WI and Ashley (Steve) Petroske of Sneads Ferry, NC; and great-grandchildren, Eleanor Lawrence, Oliver Lawrence, Luca and Baen Kerney. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, C. Paul and Ethel Nulton; her husband, Donald Lawrence; and three siblings, Virgil Nulton, Francis Hoftiezer, and Mary Schroeder.

A Funeral Service will be on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parfreyville United Methodist Church, N1979 County Road K, Waupaca, WI. Reverend Eric Taylor will officiate. A visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Rural Cemetery in the Town of Dayton following the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Rural Cemetery Association in the name of Eunice E. Lawrence. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.

Flater, Brian William

Brian William Flater, age 55, of Manawa, very peacefully took his last breath and God took him on Sunday morning, September 22, 2019 at 8:40 a.m., with his family by his side, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Brian was born on October 18, 1963 in Waupaca, the eldest of two boys. He attended Manawa High School and worked at Waupaca Foundry for 33 years. Brian was a long-term donor to St. Jude Hospital every month. He loved fishing and traveling on fishing trips to Canada, North Dakota and Minnesota. Brian also enjoyed traveling to visit friends in Kentucky. Brian will always be remembered as a hard working, honest, trustworthy man! He loved the outdoors, snowmobiling and riding ATV. He was a dedicated and proud father in Brandon’s ATV Motocross.

Brian is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Slomska-Flater; children, Brandon Flater (Morgan Bauer), Heather Phillips and Jason Phillips; parents, Kathryn Rasmussen-Flater and Edwin Flater and brother, Ronald (Janet) Flater. He is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends. Brian was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Fern Rasmussen, William and Alice Flater and Roberta Slomska; aunts, Carol Jean Barden, Mary Thoe, Georgeann Rasmussen and Margaret Bailey; and uncles, Jim Barden, Robert Bailey, Howard Seefeldt, Art Pethke; and cousins, Dan Seefeldt and Jimmy Barden.

The funeral service for Brian will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Manawa with Rev. Nathan Reichle officiating. Olson, Hazel “Sue”

Hazel “Sue” E. Olson, age 91, of Waupaca, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Crossroads Care Center of Weyauwega.

She was born in Junction City, WI on August 3, 1928 to Albert and Violet (Eastman) Schultz. She attended kindergarten at McKinley School in Stevens Point. For grades 1 thru 8, she went to Oak Hill School, a one room school located near Junction City. Hazel then attended P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point. On September 9, 1954, she was united in marriage to Ward C. Olson, and they made their home near Scandinavia. She worked for many years at Wohlt Cheese Factory in Fremont. Hazel enjoyed working in the yard, tending to her flowers and trees. She also enjoyed traveling, biking and hiking.

Hazel is survived by one sister, Anona Martin of Florida, and many dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Jorgensen and brothers: Albert, Ferdinand, David, Louis, Walter, and Dennis Schultz.

Though Hazel never had children of her own, she was a wonderful second mother to many children throughout the years.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1120 Evans St, Waupaca, with Pastor Ron Siemers officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial of cremains will take place at 2 p.m. at Farmington Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Sunday School program at Immanuel Lutheran Church or St. Peter Lutheran School in Weyauwega. The Maple Crest Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Jeanette “Jan” O. (Hutchison) Plowman, age 89 of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully in her home, September 12, 2019, with her loving family by her.

She was born June 23, 1930 in New London, WI. Jeanette was united in marriage to Herbert in New London, WI on May 13, 1951. They were married 59 1/2 years.

Jeanette’s legacy continues through her four children: Diane Minden (Jim); James Plowman, Lisa Heins (Jeff) and Gregory Plowman; grandchildren: Jeffrey, Michael and Lea Minden and Nicole and Janna Heins; sister, Maryette Fischer (Richard).

Christensen, Nedra

Nedra A. Christensen, age 92 of Waupaca, WI passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2019.

She was born on April 4, 1927 in the Town of Lanark, WI; daughter of Anthony and Hazel (Jones) Riley. On October 2, 1948, Nedra married Bill Christensen in Scobey, MT. They moved to the Waupaca area in 1961 where they farmed until 1988. She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church – Lanark. Nedra enjoyed polka music, spent many years dancing, loved to crochet, making quilts, was famous for her apple pies and had an endless supply of chocolate chip cookies given freely for the exchange of a hug.

Nedra is survived by her sons, Richard (Darlene) Christensen of Waupaca, WI; Ken (Sharon) Christensen of Waupaca, WI; daughters: Marcia Johnson of Casa Grande, AZ; Joanne Christopherson of Appleton, WI; Hazel Packer of Amherst, WI; Cathy (Chris) Noth of Bancroft, WI; 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Jerry) Kurzynski of Amherst, WI; brother; Richard Riley of Eastman, GA; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Nedra was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; one son; two grandsons, Michael Christensen and Joseph Carlson; sons-in-law, Richard Scott Packer, Ray Johnson, Gary Christopherson; two brothers, Ronald (Mary Ellen) Riley and Dean Riley, and one sister, Mary (William) Helbach.

A Funeral Mass will be on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, State Hwy 54, Almond, WI. Father Peter Manickam and Father James Kurzynski will preside. A visitation will be held on Sunday evening, Sept. 29, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca with a Rosary Service to be held at 7:00 p.m. A visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in the Town of Lanark following the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Theda Care At Home Hospice.

The family is extremely grateful for the warm, loving and tender care given by Theda Care At Home Hospice and Bethany Home. The care Nedra received will never be forgotten.
