Towne, Garth Oscar

Garth Oscar Towne, 86, of Wild Rose, passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at home, fulfilling his wish that he would live out his days on the farm he loved.

Born in Wild Rose, WI, on May 26, 1933, he was the son of the late Earl and Mary (Eserhut) Towne. Garth began farming behind horses on his father’s farm in the Town of Belmont, Portage County, before moving to Springwater Township, shortly after he was married, where he farmed for over 60 years. In the early 1970s, Garth gave up the goal of designing the perfect feeder pig barn to become a dairy farmer. He was proud of his high producing herd of Holstein cows that he often serenaded and petted. Garth gained notoriety for one of his calves born in 2007. The calf, the seventh birth of the season and born on July 7, was distinguished by a big seven on its head. Garth named the calf “Lucky Number 7.” Garth attended freshman year at Wild Rose High School and then transferred to Waupaca High School for the agriculture curriculum. He was active in student organizations there including the Future Farmers of America, Historical Society, and Intramurals. Although a good student, after school was out for the day, Garth also spent time in the pool halls of Waupaca, where he became known as the “Milky Way Kid,” because he collected his winnings in Milky Way bars. After graduating from Waupaca High School, Garth played baseball for a Town of Belmont community baseball team. A natural athlete, but right-handed, Garth taught himself to bat left-handed and batted clean-up. Garth, who played first base, was once scouted by the majors, but a chance to play professional baseball just couldn’t compete with farming. He also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and was a bow hunter for many years, always known for getting his buck. As a young man, he won a trap shooting contest, winning the prize of a turkey for the family table. Garth took up running in his 50s, entering some road races and winning his age group. When his children were in school, Garth served on the PTA, and later PTO, for the Wild Rose School District. He was on the committee overseeing the construction of a new school building in the 1970s. At a time when the school district was considering consolidating with another district, he was a vocal supporter of keeping a high school in Wild Rose. He was proud to have been able to see all six of his children graduate from college, the first generation in the family to do so. He was a supervisor in Springwater Township for over 30 years. As township supervisor, he spearheaded the construction of the Springwater Volunteer Covered Bridge which was built in 1997. The bridge, which carries traffic over Pine River, has become the focal point of Springwater Township’s Covered Bridge Park. Garth was an armchair historian, a teller of stories, a lover of chocolate, a merciless checker player, a bridge-builder, and a proud father and grandfather.

His wisdom and singing voice will be deeply missed by his wife, Wilma (Bauer) Towne; their six children: Rachelle Towne, Wild Rose, her companion Bruce Harrison, Poy Sippi, her former husband and friend David Bleskacek, IL, and their son, Austin Bleskacek (companion Jackie Schulz), Madison; Tammie Rau (Ron), Almond; Chari Towne (Jay Gregg), PA; Garnet Towne (companion Loren Lemke), MN; Ursula Towne (Brett Moore), IL, and her son, Vantine Moyer (companion Paige Bohannon), IL; and Trenton Towne (Rebecca), and their sons, Atticus, Solomon, Asher, and Elias, Waupaca; and one sister, Elaine Junkens (Ron), Almond, as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leighton Towne and Leland Towne; one sister, Beth Johnson, and one grandson, Samuel Orion Moyer.

A celebration of Garth’s life will take place on May 24, 2020 at the Covered Bridge Park.

Final commitment will be private with the family. Arrangements by the Maple Crest Funeral Home, Waupaca, WI. On-line condolences may be made at https://www.maplecrestfh.com/notices/Garth-Towne

James Soren Johnson, age 68, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.

He was born January 23, 1952 in Waupaca, WI; son of Richard E. and Maxine V. (Czeskleba) Johnson. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends. Jim was very proud of his Waupaca heritage and was recognized by the Waupaca Area Genealogical Society as his ancestors came to Waupaca before 1870. A graduate of Waupaca High School, Jim received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History at the University of Wisconsin – Madison after which he earned his M.B.A., also at UW – Madison. He was a committed Comet and Badger through his entire life. Jim worked in the Human Resources Department at the world’s largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia. He was also a museum interpreter at Williamsburg, and it was in that role that he recognized his true passion in storytelling. After returning to Waupaca, Jim read and told stories to Grades 1-5 at the Learning Center and Chain School for 15 years. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. He attended CRECEO and completed EMF courses. St. Mark’s was not just a church to Jim, but also family who were companions on his spiritual journey. Jim felt the length of his life was due to the excellent care he received from the Waupaca medical community to include the staffs at ThedaCare and Bethany Home.

Jim is survived by three siblings: Nancy (Tony) Hamilton of Lake Forest, CA; Susan (Keith Reingold) Johnson of Salmon Arm, B.C., Canada, and Stephen E. (Carole) Johnson of Waupaca, WI. He is further survived by nieces and nephews: Kristin (Patrick) Flannery of Geneva, IL; Anthony Hamilton of Irvine, CA; Erika (friend, Jeremiah) Johnson of Hortonville, WI and Caitlin (Adam) Benzshawel of De Pere, WI; Stephen “Michael” Johnson of Temecula, CA, and David Johnson of Oshkosh, WI, and grand-nieces and nephews: Patrick and Nolan Flannery, Emma Carton, Paisley and Mason Benzshawel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Maxine Johnson, brother Richard G. Johnson, and niece, Michelle Hamilton.

Jim’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staffs of ThedaCare – Waupaca, ThedaCare Regional Medical Center – Appleton and Bethany Home for their exceptional professionalism, talents, care and friendship throughout Jim’s life.

Karen Ilene (Strahl) Malone, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 17, 2020. She was born on November 11, 1945 to James “Howard” and Florence Strahl in Randall, MN.

The family later moved to Sheboygan, WI. After graduating from Sheboygan South High School, she began her career working in sales and marketing. For many years, Karen worked at The Waupaca Foundry and Tran Star in Waupaca, where she formed many close friendships that she treasured until her passing. Most recently, she worked at the Party City and Fleet Farm corporate offices in Appleton, WI before she retired. Not surprisingly, with every professional move she ever made, lifelong friends were added along the way. Her welcoming, fully accepting approach to life pulled all close to her. Her enormous heart and compassion were special and drew everyone she met in. In her younger years she loved raising and riding horses. As her family grew, she focused on her kids. She proudly cheered on her sons, supporting them throughout their teenage years. She was their wrestling team’s biggest fan rooting for her boys and the entire team. There wasn’t a meet that she didn’t attend. She was loved by any friend of her children. To their friends who knew her, they simply and fondly referred to her as “Mom!” She was so proud of her children growing up, supporting them with everything they encountered in life. Steadfastly there, ready to listen, and always with a hug. Then, she became a Grandma, twice! She just absolutely adored her newest role. At very early ages, both of her Grandsons fell in love with playing hockey, and she fell in love with watching them. She was happiest at the ice rink. Countless hours spent supporting them and cheering them on, learning the rules of a new sport that she hadn’t known before. Her favorite times were with family, cooking for the family get-togethers and spending those precious days playing games in the back yard creating smiles, laughs, and many memories. Throughout her life she was blessed with the ability to transform emotion into words. Whether through poetry, special cards, or holiday greetings, true to herself, she had a unique way to connect with people. Though often therapeutic for her, she brought comfort to those dealing with difficult times, loss, or sadness. To honor special moments in life, her words brought joy and happiness. A very special family friend described her best, “I’ve not known anyone with the capacity to care and love more than her. Given all that she faced, much more than most, she was able to look outside all of that and focus on those around her.” For those here on earth, we have cherished our time with Karen, she was admired, loved, and will be forever missed. It’s time now for us to share her with her mom, her dad, and beloved Joel, and Kaelynn in Heaven.

She was preceded in death by her firstborn, Joel, and her last child, Kaelynn; father, James Howard Strahl and her mother, Florence Strahl; half sisters, Adeline Hagar, Marie Frank, Elaine Lynch, Clara Hunter, Irene Strahl, and half brothers, Harold Strahl, Howard Strahl, Harris Refsland and Dale Refsland. She is survived by her son, Daniel Mantz (Waupaca), daughter, Dena Mantz (fiancé Andrew Lang), (Oshkosh); stepson, Ryan Reisman (Adam), (Las Vegas, NV); stepdaughter, Erin Malone (Waupaca); grandsons, Ryan Mantz and Jake Mantz (Oshkosh); sister, Virginia Griego (Roy, UT); sister, Lori Gilbertson (Sheboygan); brother Glen Strahl (Moreno Valley, CA), and half sister, Florence Bellamy, (Little Falls, MN). She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca.
