Robert “Bob” Sasse, age 80, of Clintonville passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Greentree Health & Rehabilitation Center, Clintonville.

Robert Glen Sasse was born on February 3, 1939 in Clintonville to Julius and Annie (Kittleson) Sasse. Bob grew up in Clintonville where he graduated from high school in 1957. He entered the U.S. Navy serving from 1958-1959 and was stationed mostly in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Bob was united in marriage on August 6, 1960 to Joyce L. Lutz at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Clintonville. The couple belonged to a snowmobile club and liked taking rides together as a family. Bob and Joyce also enjoyed dancing and they did a mean jitterbug. After 49 years of marriage, his wife preceded him in death on May 1, 2010. Bob was always very handy and was an auto mechanic by trade. He owned and operated the local Standard Gas Station and Bob’s Car Repair shop. Then he was employed at Klein Chevrolet for many years. Bob had a strong work ethic and often had several part-time jobs; including driving school bus and working at Graceland Cemetery. Bob was a former member of Christus Lutheran Church and is currently a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church. In his early days, during summertime he was the local “taxi” driver dropping off all the neighborhood kids at the outdoor swimming pool. He liked curling and bowling; and played on different leagues over the years. Bob always kept himself busy and enjoyed “putzing around” his home; doing yard work and fixing up classic cars and trucks. He was a morning person who was up no later than 5 a.m. at which time he would promptly make a pot of coffee. Bob often spent breakfast at the restaurant with friends. He was a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy who also had a sweet tooth; and also enjoyed some beer or whiskey from time to time. His favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends at his trailer home up north near Crooked Lake. Bob liked deer hunting, picking wild blackberries, and playing cards; especially Royal Rummy, cribbage, and Sheepshead. Another annual tradition for so many years was lighting up his house and property with Christmas decorations for all the passersby to enjoy. Bob married again on February 22, 2016 to Justine M. Borlen-Roe at the Waupaca County courthouse. The couple shared four loving years together. Bob will be remembered most as a social, friendly, and kind person. The type who would give the shirt off his back to a stranger. He smiled often and had a free spirit. Bob was a simple man who loved being up north and outdoors; normally found wearing a stocking or cowboy hat, boots, and long underwear.

Survivors include his wife Justine; two daughters, Tami (Ed) Singler of Shiocton and Traci (Jaime) Gerth of Los Angeles, CA; four step children: Mary (Tom) Ziarnik of Verona, Melissa (Hans) Kreklow of Manawa, Laura (Adam) Wolfgram of Appleton, and Dennis (Sarah) Roe of Marion. There are three grandchildren: Eric Singler, Ryan (Ashley) Singler, and Levi (fiancée Megan) Singler. There are eight step grandchildren: Mercede Wolfgram, Meckenzi Wolfgram, Claire Kreklow, Lane Kreklow, Alexis Roe, Sydney Roe, Dennis Roe Jr., and Dakota Roe. There is one great-grandson, Jase Singler. There is one brother Jerry (Mary) Sasse of Clintonville; one sister Carol (Ed) Kettner of Appleton; and a brother-in-law LeRoy (Anne) Lutz of Brown Deer. Bob is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Joyce; two sisters, Blanche (Richard) Burger and June (Roger) Gensler; and four brothers, Ralph (Edie), Donald, Lyle (Trudy), and David Sasse.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 1st at 12:00 noon at Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville. Rev. Christian Burg will officiate and inurnment will be at a later date at Graceland Cemetery, Clintonville. Military Honors will be provided at the funeral home by members of the VFW Post 664, American Legion Post 63, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63, all of Clintonville. Bender, Judith Marie “Judy”

Judith Marie “Judy” Bender was born December 24, 1951 at Bemidji, Minnesota to Dr. Gordon Lawrence Bender and Marion Ellen (Johnson) Bender. She passed away January 30, 2020 at Theda Care Regional Medical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was 68.

Judy grew up in Tempe, Arizona, where her father was a Professor of Zoology at Arizona State University and her mother served in many roles for the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. Except for a year in Bethesda, Maryland, Judy attended the public schools of Tempe and graduated in 1969 from Tempe High School where she was on the yearbook staff. Judy grew up swimming, camping, and boating in the desert southwest and attended church camp in Prescott, Arizona, both as a camper and a counselor. With her family, she visited her paternal grandparents each summer at the Chain O’Lakes in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Judy attended Northern Arizona University for one year, then transferred to Arizona State University, where she earned a B.S. degree in home economics with an emphasis in family and child development in 1974. One summer, Judy and a friend drove from Arizona to Fairbanks, Alaska and then she continued on to Hawaii for an adventure on her own. She taught Head Start several years and earned her M.Ed. in deaf education at Lewis & Clark College in 1981. Judy married John Thomas Ream on March 19, 1982 and lived in the Bender family home in Tempe. Three children were born–Emily Desiree, Kyle Lawrence, and Nicole Marie–and Judy taught in the area schools. A short move to Kearney, Arizona was followed by another to Yuma, where her fourth child, Kathryn Elizabeth, was born. Widowed in 1990, Judy moved to Prescott Valley where she raised her four children on her own and built a respected career as a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. She taught in the public schools of Mesa, Kearney, and Yuma, and at the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind. She was a compassionate and strong advocate for her students’ success and mentored other young professionals to become teachers of the deaf. Her students remembered her as one who made learning fun, inspired them to strive, and developed their “puzzle-thinking” skills. After nearly thirty years of teaching, she retired in 2007 and moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin to be near when her parents needed help. Judy had the biggest heart and spent a lifetime giving it freely to everyone she knew. Shy in a group, she loved getting together to talk with family or a good friend. She was sentimental about the people and events of every stage of her life, and she had a sharp memory for them. She also had an uncanny ability to multiply large numbers in only seconds, did beautiful embroidery work, and made the greatest Mexican food. Everyone knew her soft spot for animals, which resulted in a lifetime of beloved dogs, cats, and the occasional bird or lizard. Judy endured significant losses and hardships in her life, but she always showed up for the ones she loved. She listened with genuine interest, was ready with a happy laugh, and supported unconditionally. “Our phone calls were rarely quick, our hugs were never short, and our laughter could go on and on.”

Judy was preceded in death by her father. Holding her close in memory are her mother, Marion Bender; her children, Emily Murphy, Kyle Bender, Nicole Bender-Ream, and Katie Bender-Ream; her grandchildren, Caleb, Logan, and Leila Murphy; her sisters, Barbara (Reeder) Herrick, Caryl Bender, and Patti Bender (Patrick Fleming); nieces and nephews, Bonnie (Mark) Pratt, Cindy (Chris) English, Nancy (Nathan) Daoust, Jessica and Tiffany Bender, Scott Konzem (Rachel Voorhies), and Sally (Andy) Burns; plus a host of extended family and close, long-time friends.

Services will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Crystal Lake Methodist Church on Highway K in Dayton Township, Waupaca. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, Wisconsin is assisting the family with local arrangements. Gifts in her name may be made to: Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind-North Central Regional Cooperative, 25 W. Saddlehorn Road, Sedona, AZ 86351, Attn: Dale De Vries.

Phyllis Mae (Anderson) Kettenhoven, age 81, of Clintonville passed away Friday, January 31, at Care Partners in Clintonville.

Phyllis was born on November 12, 1938, in Clintonville to Lester and Lizzie (Wedde) Anderson. On September 22, 1956, Phyllis was united in marriage to James Donald Kettenhoven in Black Creek where the couple resided until relocating to Clintonville. Phyllis worked at “The Drive” (FWD) as a machinist and later, Donaldson Cleaners for years. Phyllis was a hard worker all her life, but she knew how to have fun, too. She was an avid hunter and spent quite a few hunting seasons with the family even during the times they camped on the “blue bus” where she was also the camp cook. She enjoyed many games of Aggravation, Yahtzee, Sheepshead, dice games and poker including Texas Hold’em, and other card games. She also enjoyed bass fishing alongside her husband including many opening-weekend family bass tournaments on Pigeon Pond in Clintonville. She played softball for Cactus Jack’s and Wishing Well, with the Wishing Well team taking a first place for Women’s Slow Pitch. She was a great bowler with at least one trophy, and her team even competed in a televised tournament. After their kids were raised, Phyllis and Jim got the itch to move to Land O’ Lakes where relatives had vacation spots or built retirement havens. They worked as caretakers for a nursing home and a resort while building “Para Dice”, the name given to their northern paradise. Lifetime memories were made for the entire family who enjoyed recreation on and near Lac Vieux Dessert including fishing, four-wheeling and nights playing games around the kitchen table or sitting on the beautiful covered deck and watching the fire in the pit. They eventually made the decision to retire and move back to Clintonville into the home where they had raised their family. Phyllis and James celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in the fall of 2006. The couple always danced together like they were floating on air, never missing a beat and always in sync with each other as they had lived their entire life. She has now joined her life-long love for the next dance.

Phyllis is survived by their five children: Steve (Kathleen) Kettenhoven (Clintonville), Scott (Penny) Kettenhoven (Clintonville), Lori Kettenhoven (Jon) of Pearson, Kirt (Pamela) Kettenhoven (Clintonville), and James Donald Jr. (Tammy) Kettenhoven (New London). January 13, 1935 – February 6, 2020

Donald R. Bauer, formally of Pocahontas, IL, and Weyauwega, WI passed away peacefully at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI.

Don had been at the Veterans home since 2012, where he was well cared for. Don married his wife Joyce on September 11, 1957. They shared a lot together and had two children, daughter Pat Schultz, from Richmond, VA and son Rob from Clintonville, WI. Don was an auto mechanic in his early part of his life working for Keeten’s Standard service for 16 years. Then he decided to do something different and started working for his uncle Ed Bauer as a traveling fur buyer. He carved out his route into Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. While on his travels and meeting new people he was convinced to move to Wisconsin and start his own fur business. So in June of 1976, he packed up his family and moved to Wisconsin. Built his own fur business for the winter months and in the spring and summer, he sold produce and went to trapper’s conventions. Don was a dreamer and loved to come up with new gimmicks to sell at the State Trappers conventions. From selling trapping supplies to buckets and wildlife pictures, and his last gig was cooking and selling french-fries. He was a man with great imagination and he would never surprise you with what he would come up with next. In 2007, he decided to give it up and retire. Don and Joyce worked hard their whole lives and never gave up on anything. They sold their business and moved to an apartment in Weyauwega. In 2012 Don went to the Veterans home to get the deserved care that he needed that Joyce couldn’t do for him any longer. For the longest time, Joyce would go see him every day and spend time with him and bring him treats. He loved treats!! Don and Joyce were married for 61 years. Like all people, there were good and bad times, but they pulled through it and never gave up. In the end, they truly loved each other and knew the Lord. He will be truly missed and never forgotten. Until we meet again!!

Don is survived by his daughter Pat Schultz, of Richmond, Virginia; son Robert (Judie) Bauer of Clintonville, WI; two grandchildren, Ryne Schulz of Phoenix, AZ and Zach Bauer of Neenah, WI.
